On 1 July 2026 at 4.55 am, the convoy set off from Fatzer AG in Romanshorn towards Schwägalp. Three articulated lorries transported the first two suspension cables and the new haul rope for the future Säntisbahn to the construction site. Each of the two suspension cable reels weighs 55 tonnes, whilst the haul rope weighs a further 36 tonnes.
This project also holds special historical significance for us: as far back as 1960, EMIL EGGER was commissioned to transport the suspension cables for the Säntisbahn. The photographs from that time vividly illustrate just how much experience, technical expertise and pioneering spirit were required to carry out such a transport operation even back then.
Today, the cables are significantly stronger: the new suspension cables have a diameter of 60 mm – compared with 47.5 mm on the previous cable car. Their weight has also increased accordingly. It is all the more pleasing that we are once again able to put our transport expertise to good use in this next chapter of the Säntisbahn’s history.
Upon arrival, the cable reels were positioned on the prepared gravel areas and lowered into place using a hydraulic system. Preparations are now under way for the forthcoming cable pulling operation and the subsequent cable splicing.
