Largest crane in Switzerland on OLMA construction site in St. Gallen

Extension of the OLMA St. Gallen exhibition grounds by covering the freeway

For the extension of the OLMA St. Gallen exhibition grounds, the highway will be covered by about 180 meters. From September 26 to October 26, 2021, 186 concrete elements weighing up to 90 tons will be installed over the highway during the night. During this time, one direction of travel will be blocked at night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. when these girders are positioned with millimeter precision using the EMIL EGGER AG mega crane. To ensure that the closure extends over as few nights as possible, the 1000-ton LR-11000 crawler crane will be used for the work.

The imposing machine was delivered by 40 semitrailer trucks, and assembly took around 4 days. The weight of a single crawler is still 60 tons, and a 250-ton auxiliary crane assembles the various components. The total weight of this colossus is 1300 tons including the many counterweights necessary to safely lift these heavy loads. The length of the cantilever is impressive at 144 meters, a huge difference compared to the tallest building in the Cantonal Hospital, Haus04, which is only 78 meters high.

The first, nighttime assembly work has already been carried out and proceeded according to the program. Michael Egger, as head of heavy lift logistics at EMIL EGGER AG, is pleased with the positive progress of this challenging work. “It’s great that we can also present our mega crane in St. Gallen for once, after we increasingly carry out corresponding crane operations of bridges and elements of up to 500 tons in the Central Plateau and especially in Western Switzerland. Our specialists such as crane operators and drivers are also happy to be close to home.”

Through this expansion OLMA Messen gains an additional area on which a new hall with 9000 m² will be built, which should be ready for occupancy in autumn 2023.

Replacement of three old RHB steel bridges by ETE crane logistics
Not far from the fashionable spa and resort town of St. Moritz in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, a Liebherr LR 11000 crawler crane has installed a 176-ton railroad bridge. This most powerful crawler crane in Switzerland belongs to the logistics and transport company EMIL EGGER AG and got the job done at an altitude of just under 2,000 meters in the Alps – with an unusual setup configuration due to lack of space. In total, three aged truss bridges of the Rhaetian Railway were replaced by the Liebherr crane.

Grimsel dam – assembly of the luffing jib cranes
At the beginning of this new year, we like to take a look back at the start of the project of the century – the new dam on the Grimsel. The dam is a double-curved arch dam with a volume of about 215,000 cubic meters of concrete. By the end of the 2021 construction season, around 35,000 cubic meters of concrete have been used, which means that around 16 percent of the wall has been built.
